Level of Learning: Introductory
This presentation is intended to provide an overview of the licensing process for pre-licensees as they work toward licensure in marriage and family therapy. Topics to be discussed include: the marriage and family therapy licensing process; supervised experience requirements for applicants; supervisor qualifications and supervision requirements; licensing examinations; and common employment issues pre-licensees encounter with their supervisors.

Program Goals

Participants will gain a greater understanding of the many challenges facing pre-licensees working toward licensure.

Learning Objectives

  1. Record the number of hours and the number of weeks of supervised experience required
  2. Identify the “options” for counting hours currently available to pre-licensees
  3. Apply how the 90-day rules impacts their ability to count hours
Differentiate how to advertise themselves in the various stages of licensing
  4. Organize their hours by documenting on the correct BBS related forms
  5. Review their incremental progress toward licensure and decide on their best strategies to take to complete their 3000 hours

Measurable Learning Objectives

  • Participants will understand how the BBS counts applicants’ supervised experience hours under the “Option 1” system
  • Participants will be able to: a) distinguish between the two 90-day rules and the two six-year rules; and b) state how these rules impact the licensure process
  • Participants will be able to identify the work settings in which MFT trainees and associates can accumulate supervised experience hours
  • Participants will be able to identify the eligibility requirements for, and responsibilities of supervisors
